Among these, 99m Tc-DMSA renal scintigraphy has been considered the most sensitive method for proving the existence of parenchymal damage due to acute or chronic pyelonephritis and acquiring data on differential kidney function [4, 8, 9]. Either planar imaging or SPECT can be used to acquire 99m Tc-DMSA renal cortical
2008-09-21 · Tc-99m (V) DMSA scintigraphy was performed in fourteen patients with IC. In all patients scintigraphy was performed within 2 d after colonoscopy, in order to avoid any variation in disease activity. Imaging was performed after intravenous administration of 555 MBq (15 mCi) of Tc-99m (V) DMSA. Scintigraphy with Tc-99m dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA) is considered a reference method for assessment of parenchymal lesions and estimation of differential kidney function. Abnormalities on DMSA scan - scarring, hydronephrosis and reduced differential renal function - were compared with presence of vesicoureteric reflux on MCUG.

This guideline will assist individual departments in the formulation of their own local protocols. These guidelines apply to studies on adults. For specific guidance for paediatric PURPOSE: To evaluate the use of pentavalent (V) technetium 99m (99mTc) dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA) scintigraphy for the assessment of disease activity in patients with inflammatory bowel disease During a 2 year period, 175 children below 6 years of age (median 0.4 year) with non‐obstructive symptomatic urinary tract infection were studied by 99m Tc dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA) scintigraphy.
A retrospective study for data record of 106 patients subjected to voiding cystourethrogram test (VCUG), sonography test, and dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA) scintigraphy take place at King Abdulaziz University, radiology department to find out the possibilities of detecting vesicoureteral reflux (VUR) in infants and children.

99mTc-DMSA renal scintigraphy in the diagnosis and follow-up of acute pyelonephritis in children. Wallin, Lena LU () . Mark; Abstract The aim of the present thesis was to define and evaluate a strategy for identification of children who are at risk of developing progressive renal lesions after acute pyelonephritis. In most centres scintigraphy is generally performed 2-4 hours after DMSA administration.

Reflux was seen in 27% of all children and in 38% of the renal units that were abnormal at DMSA scintigraphy. The ability to assess function makes scintigraphy even more valuable. A dromedary hump, a fetal lobulation, or a renal column of Bertin may appear as a mass on an US, CT, or MRI. DMSA or GH images (pinhole and/or SPECT) will demonstrate the questionable tissue to be normally functioning and rule out a pathologic lesion. Several clinical studies have clearly demonstrated that renal sonography is not as reliable as DMSA scintigraphy for the detection of APN [26–32].In one prospective study of 91 children with culture-documented febrile UTIs, DMSA renal scans showed changes consistent with APN in 63 % of patients, while sonography revealed changes consistent with APN in only 39 % of the same patients []. What is a DMSA scan? DMSA, or dimercaptosuccinic acid, is a radioactive compound (radiopharmaceutical) that when injected into a vein allows images or pictures to be taken of the kidneys. DMSA enters the kidneys and is concentrated in functioning/normal kidney tissue, giving an indication as to how the kidneys are working.
In all, 68 kidneys appeared abnormal on DMSA scintigraphy, of which 61 showed the same on PDU (Table 1, Figures 1,2).
